  1. Moaning ex MSN'ers & facebook

    10/12/09 14:10:33 | 0 Comments

I've heard a few moans over the last month as the anniversary of the demise of msn has come and gone. I was feeling the pain for a bit but now I'm convinced that the way forward is to go get ourselves a facebook and myspace page, as this is where the bulk of the people have gone and advertise our groups there. It's a centre platform for almost anything and anyone.

There are some fascinating groups and pages if one takes the time to really look. I even found one on my old hometown called 'I have met or know somebody from Waimate'. It's so very strange though to see everyone I know playing games and basically just interacting with a bunch of applications and it's hard to get a conversation going as they are are too busy mucking out their farms, filling their zoos or something as equally compelling. This is prob another reason why yuku and other communities are failing now.

Many manager's have abandoned their groups and are now playing on facebook etc. and some are even moaning that their groups are not doing well. My presence on facebook is to keep in contact with family, activities, group members and to post community updates. If I had any more time to waste it wouldn't be playing games. It's an absolutely marvellous way though to keep up to date with the latest news, what the PM thinks (if he ever posts), and keeps all your special interest sites in one place. Every website these days seems to have links to facebook and myspace, not to mention twitter (pls don't ask my opinion on that one at this time).

Bravo facebook and here's to keeping our communities intact with a little help from you!

  3. An Amber Day

    05/26/09 17:44:18 | 2 Comments

One Mother's day gift this year was a baltic cognac amber necklace. Amber is fossilised tree resin (gum) and is millions of years old. It floats on water and burns. It comes in many hues with names such as cognac, honey, cherry and butterscotch.

'Amber is a powerful chakra cleanser and healer. At a physical level, it imbues the body with vitality and has the power to draw disease out of the body. By absorbing pain and negative energy, amber allows the body to rebalance and heal itself. Amber alleviates stress.

Amber provides decisiveness. It strengthens your memory and intellect and helps with emotional calming and centering. It is an excellent grounding crystal, and transmutes negative energy to positive. Amber radiates a warm and bright energy. It aids the Abdomen, Bladder, Blood, Eyes, Kidneys, Stomach, Tissue Revitalization, Throat, Liver, Joint Problems. Wearing crystal jewelry gives you the energy of the stone all day long. Amber draws disease out of afflicted areas and neutralize negative energy allowing the body to heal itself.' (this was taken from the manufacturers Info).

It must be worn next to the skin to be effective and is commonly used in baby teething necklaces and bracelets.

Thus ends the lesson for today.

I am wearing mine today. The first time I ever put it on it felt light and warm. I have spondylosis of the spine and it does seem to help in some way. Maybe psychologically, I'm not sure. It is pretty too. Even the clasp is a screw in so that it touches the skin all the way around to enhance the benefits. I certainly do feel different on the days it's worn. So I thank you, my daughter, for this wonderful gift.
Thought for the day: Does the reverse side also have a reverse side?

  4. Call me The Pie Man

    05/25/09 16:50:22 | 1 Comments

The other day I bought a Pie Maker. Actually it was a Fly Buys freebie worth 290 points and is a Sunbeam Pie Magic 2 Up PM4210 with a unique crimper seal, non-stick cooking and extra deep plates. I also got my husband the Sheffield Pocket Knife and Multitool Set (380 points) for our Anniversary on July 11th ... I'm sure he'll be pleased with it as he does a lot of tramping and it is pretty flash, a Sheffield, which is a really good brand and the Multitool 18 in 1 set is stainless steel. I have my eye on other things as one does. I know Louis really needs the Dog Coat - Cotton lined (470 points) as he hates the cold and is shivering on his blanky at the moment. The Lee Child 'Gone Tomorrow' (195 points) would be perfect for a Christmas pressy for him (husband). There is a nice 9" Portable LCD Television which would be great for 'The Truck' (motorhome). We have an old 5" b/w model from the 70's at present. The tuner is operated with a lead pencil stuck in the tuner input hole thingy to replace the broken knob .... but anyway back to the pies.

The Pie Maker has had heaps of use (almost daily for quite a while). It came with a book '101 Great Pie Ideas' and I think I've tried most of them. We've had the usual mince and cheese (btw Georgie Pie is opening up again in AK ... I used to love those GP Mince and Cheese ... did you?), steak and kidney and all sorts of leftover surprises. Apple and marshmellows was a big hit! But here's my fav Persimmon & Apple ... not really a recipe per say but these are the ingredients you must put in ...
Gingernuts (crushed), brown sugar, persimmons (sliced), apples (sliced). Do the usual sweet short pastry as the base. Sprinkle the base with some of the ginger crumble. Layer your fruit and sprinkle with the brown sugar then more of the ginger crumble over the top. Usual bake for 10 mins with a 4 min rest period. If you have a Pie Maker yourself you will know what I mean. Most all of the pies in the recipe book state a 10 min bake and 4 min rest period. The thing is not to overfull or you will have a terrible sticky mess to clean up after ... I always have a sticky mess no matter how careful I am and even when they have a pastry lid they still tend to erupt. Just leave it to cool and use a plastic fish slice to peel it off. Give it a wipe around with a warm soapy cloth and it's like new again. I put a pastry letter on the top so I know what is really in the pie ... this usually works.

It's been a godsend. A great way to use leftovers and the freezer is pretty full of pies and friends and family get them too. Handy for when guests pop in or you feel like a quick snack or two.
Thought for the day: A meat pie walks into a bar and asks the bartender for a cold one.
The bartender replies, "Sorry, we don't serve food here." (Heard it before? I think it was a ham sandwich way back then).

Still miss the old MSN format and lost mates and all that, but moving right along to newer pastures and as long as the fences aren't too high and the grass too long I should be able to weave my way around.
Thought for the day: Never believe anything until it's officially denied.

    Did you understand the above?

There's an email that's been floating around for a while, where the words are scrambled. As long as you don't think about the words as you're reading them, you can read it just fine. The trick is, the first and last letters stay the same, and only the inner letters get scrambled. Your brain reads individual words, not letters

    Translation:
Starting this blog is a new advenure for me (heck, I need them at my age and preferably without leaving my chair). Research to date: Sandysblog.yuku.com (Sandy you have sucked me in lol), Google, YouTube which seems to be finanically biased although there are a couple of video blogs there that I like ... Grandpa Pete the geriatric blogger for example. Basically it seems blogging is about exposing a part of your life to the world with the potential to invite comments and feedback so I guess one needs to be thick skinned and not expose too much lol I have the filter set to receive comments from 'friends' so do try and be kind ... you hear lol
